Introduction to China Guohua Abacus-calculating Museum of zhejiang Abacus-calculating society

Guohua Abacus-calculating Museum is the only one of more than 500 Museums that displays abacus-calculating materials. It was built on 11 Nov 1993.
Our museum has four characteristics. First, there are over 1300 calculating-tools, second there are some 1000 pieces of abacus-calculating materials. Third all the photos of national abacus-calculating activities, international exchange and exchange of both sides of the Taiwan Straits are on show. And fourth, there are more than 1500 articles of soft ware materials of achievements.

There are four abacuses which are focus of people's attention. The largest abacus is 6.52 metres long, 1.68 metres high and 1008 kg weight. The abacus which has the most cross-pieces is 6l2 metres long, and if has 225 cross-pieces, which is made up of 1575 beads.This abacus can he used by 15 persons at one time. The heaviest metal abacus is made of copper. It has 9 cross-pieces and 7 beads which is in the shape of the Ming Dynasty's drum.



The smallest abacus is carefully made of fine silver, it is no bigger than half a little finger nail. The cross-pieces are as small as a piece of hair. Every bead can be easily moved by using a pinpoint. These four abacuses are the wonders of the world, which have been entered the records of the world.
Among the exhibit, there are ancient calculating-tool modeds and replica abacuses of all historical ages which are shown in proper order. They are keeping records by tying knos, pottery balls of the western Zhou Dynasty - calculating-tools of the spring and Autumn period, calculating beads of the written Song Dynasty which was unearthed in Gucheng Bailu County Hebei province in 1920s, and calculating tools of all historical ages. There are also some foreign abacuses such as Egyptian sand abacus. European string abacus, Rome's gully abacus and the slide rule invented in the 17th Century, etc. Here you can find many kinds of metal abacuses such as abacuses of gold, silver, copper, iron aluminum, etc. There are abacuses in the shape of a pagoda, a barrel, multi-storey, the four treasures of study wall abacus and etc.

In the museum, there are even rare abacuses with he value of historical relic, such as abacuses of pure jade, green jade, jadeite, ivory, pearl, cloisonne, china, sandalwood, Buddha hall, conch, ruyi, the Eight Diagrams, carved stone, etc. There are still some life like art and technological statues such as "Cai Yuan Guang Jin", "Cai Mao San Jiang", "Lao Ao Chi Jia", "Ba Xian Guo Hai", etc. They are made in the years between the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. The exhibits are rich and varid.
