Course & Syllabus

ALOHA Mental Arithmetic program comprises of eight (8) terms. The duration of each term is 12 weeks. Classes are conducted for 2 hour sessions – once a week over a period of around three (3) calendar months. Assesments are conducted to test the competence and to assess the progress of each student at the end of each term. This training is carried out by a proactive method between the teacher and the student in order to create an environment that "taps" the interest of the student in learning arithmetic.

The Program Curriculum.

Term 1
The Finger Method - The child is initially taught to count from 0 - 99 using his fingers. This hands on experience makes the child understand the concept of numbers. It is then trained to do addition and subtraction using the Aloha concept. Once these calculations are learned by the child, only then, will he be introduced to the abacus.

Term 2
The Abacus:- The use of the abacus is the next step in learning arithmetic. Here the child is taught to transfer the theory of the finger method to the abacus board. The child is taught the basic movements of the abacus board. The child at the end of the term can now calculate addition and subtraction from 1 to 1000.

Term 3
Mental Arithmetic:- Here the child is taught to visualize the abacus board in his mind and calculate. He is trained to do the calculations mentally by using the visiual abacus board in his mind. The method of multiplication is now introduced to the child.

Term 4
The child continues to master the concept of Mental Arithemtic. The division method of calculation is now introduced and taught to the child. The attention is centered on complex and challenging mathematical numbers to enable the child to acquire a complete mastery on his basic concepts.

Term 5 - 8
The visualization of the functions of (+ - x ÷ ) method is established. The lessons are concentrated on larger and more complex numbers. The learner is required to complete it with speed and accuraccy.
